Cradled by the Gulf of Guinea, this West African country is known for its biodiversity, which includes rainforests, grasslands and wetlands. Within this varied ecology, a number of exports, such as oil, gold and manganese, have brought economic stability.

Mirroring the country’s diversity, the Ghanaian people are numerous in their cultures and traditions. Among the 34 million people in Ghana, there are 20 people groups and over 100 different languages spoken, Akan and English being the most common.

Though, Islam has been growing in recent years, God’s work is still very evident in Ghana. Local believers are eager for discipleship and excited to learn more about how they can take God to the nations.

Sharing the love of God in Ghana

OM’s presence in Ghana began in 1996 as a ministry focused on the least reached in the country’s rural towns. Since then, OM has expanded and established numerous ministries that allow for people to use their unique passions and skills to share Christ with others.

OM’s Christian literature ministry seeks to provide written and audio Bibles to the least reached in northern Ghana. There is also a justice and relief ministry that rescues those stuck in human trafficking and shares the hope of Christ. Proximity to the Sahel — a predominately Muslim area stretching across North Africa — has led to an increase in Islam’s presence in Ghana. Because of this, each OM has sought to reach this growing population of Muslims. Good News Bible Clubs provide adults and children with opportunities to meet believers and hear about the Bible.

Jesus followers in Ghana

Christianity is the most common religion in Ghana, though, the country is becoming increasingly influenced by Islam and other ethnic religions are still quite common among Ghanaians. However, there is hope. Ghana is a country of great potential. God has already been faithful in establishing many Bible-believing churches and there are many wonderful ministries around the country. The problem is that most believers are not being sent out by their churches to share Christ with others.

OM ministries in Ghana would benefit from Jesus followers with a heart to disciple local believers as well as those interested in Jesus. Whether helping local believers understand the role they play in sharing the good news near and far, or going deeper into Ghana’s least-reached regions, you have an opportunity to join God in the work He is already doing in this country.

But work on the field is not the only necessity. Prayer is also needed. Pray against the growing hold of Islam on the country; that Muslims may be awakened to the true saving power of Christ. Pray for local church leaders to become passionate about missions and that, soon, they would send believers out into Ghana, the Sahel and the world.
